Marco Rubio and Benjamin Netanyahu Agree: Hamas Must Be Removed for Peace to Prevail

In a significant diplomatic engagement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened on February 16, 2025, in Jerusalem to address the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Both leaders underscored the necessity of dismantling Hamas to achieve lasting peace in the region.
Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s commitment to neutralizing Hamas’s military capabilities and political influence in Gaza. He stated, “We will eliminate Hamas’s military capability and its political rule in Gaza. We will bring all our hostages home and we will ensure that Gaza never again poses a threat to Israel.”
Secretary Rubio echoed this stance, asserting that as long as Hamas maintains its capacity to govern and wield violence, peace remains unattainable. He declared, “Hamas cannot continue as a military or government force… They must be eliminated. It must be eradicated.”
The meeting coincided with the 500th day since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of 251 hostages. Recent developments have seen the release of three Israeli hostages, including American citizen Sagui Dekel-Chen, in exchange for 369 Palestinian prisoners. Despite these releases, 73 hostages remain in captivity.
The United States and Israel continue to collaborate on strategies to eliminate Hamas and restore stability to the region. However, challenges persist, as Hamas demands the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and insists on retaining its governance—a proposition both the U.S. and Israel find unacceptable.
As the situation evolves, the international community closely monitors the efforts of the U.S. and Israel to address the multifaceted challenges posed by Hamas and to work towards a sustainable peace in the Middle East.
