Christian Movies 2026: The Complete Guide to Every Faith Film of the Year

2026 is shaping up to be the biggest year in the history of faith-based cinema. Angel Studios alone plans to put ten films in theaters this year, Amazon MGM Studios has stepped in to carry The Chosen to a global audience, and A-list names like Tommy Lee Jones, Owen Wilson, Jeff Daniels, Jim Caviezel and Michael Keaton are now headlining projects built on faith, redemption and hope. Here is the complete picture of every Christian and faith-friendly movie of 2026 — what has already released, what is still to come, and what it all means.
The Year So Far: What Released From January to October
The year opened strong. I Was a Stranger (January 9, Angel Studios) told the story of a Syrian doctor forced to flee Aleppo with her young daughter, a cinematic story of courage and sacrifice that began streaming on Angel in February. Still Hope followed on February 5, and Fathom Events brought The Apocalypse of St John to theaters for a limited three-night run in mid-February.
The first major commercial hit of the year came on February 20, when Lionsgate released I Can Only Imagine 2. The sequel to the 2018 surprise smash continues the true story of MercyMe frontman Bart Millard, and audiences showed up: the film opened at No. 3 at the domestic box office with $7.75 million and finished its theatrical run with roughly $18.6 million. Meanwhile, AMC Theatres ran its month-long "Voices of Hope" series in February, re-releasing eight beloved faith classics — I Can Only Imagine, I Still Believe, Sound of Freedom, Unsung Hero, The King of Kings, American Underdog, DAVID and Jesus Revolution — back on the big screen.
Spring continued the momentum through event cinema. Fathom's one-night-and-limited-run slate included He Calls Me Daughter (March 17–18), the worship-documentary The First Hymn (March 24 & 26), Legends of the Lost Ark (April 12, 14, 15), The Story of Everything (April 30–May 6), That They May Be One (May 19–20) and Sacred Heart: His Reign Has No End (June 9–11). Sight & Sound Theatres, the Lancaster-based stage ministry, brought its stage production A Great Awakening to cinemas on April 3, and the marriage-based drama Better Together opened May 15.
Angel Studios' Ten-Film Year
No studio is doing more for faith-friendly filmmaking in 2026 than Angel, which announced a ten-film theatrical slate at CinemaCon in April after setting the record for the highest-grossing faith-based animated theatrical opening of all time with DAVID and landing two of 2025's top ten animated releases (DAVID and The King of Kings). Its 2026 lineup so far:
- Animal Farm (May 1) — Andy Serkis' adaptation of Orwell's allegory, with a voice cast including Seth Rogen, Woody Harrelson, Glenn Close and Kieran Culkin; a warning about how revolutions for equality decay into tyranny.
- Young Washington (July 3) — directed by Jon Erwin of Kingdom Story Company, the untold story of George Washington before the Revolution, timed to America's 250th anniversary, starring Kelsey Grammer, Mary-Louise Parker and Ben Kingsley.
- The Brink of War (August 14) — a Cold War drama about the Reagan–Gorbachev Reykjavik Summit, starring Jeff Daniels as President Reagan alongside Jared Harris and J.K. Simmons.
- Runner (September 11) — an action thriller with heart, pairing Owen Wilson and Alan Ritchson in a race against a cartel to save a child's life.
- Angel and the Badman (October 2026) — a reimagining of the John Wayne classic about an outlaw offered mercy and a new life, starring Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones, Zachary Levi and Neal McDonough; in theaters now.
And the biggest titles are still ahead: Drummer Boy (November 6), the For King & Country Christmas musical about two brothers on opposite sides of the Revolutionary War; Jimmy (November 6); Hershey (Thanksgiving), the story of the chocolate maker whose faith shaped his generosity, starring Finn Wittrock and Alexandra Daddario; and Zero A.D.: The Birth of Christ (December 11), director Alejandro Monteverde's epic retelling of the first Christmas starring Jim Caviezel — a film designed to be this year's family Christmas event.
The Chosen Season 6: The Hour Has Come
The most anticipated faith release of the year belongs to television. The Chosen Season 6 streams exclusively on Prime Video beginning November 15, 2026, in a landmark partnership between creator Dallas Jenkins' 5&2 Studios and Amazon MGM Studios. The new season dramatises the final day of Jesus' earthly life — "the hour has come," as the trailer declares — carrying the story through the crucifixion. The season's finale will then return to theaters as a global theatrical film on March 12, 2027. For the world's largest crowd-funded series, the Amazon deal marks the moment faith content fully entered the Hollywood mainstream.
Why 2026 Is a Turning Point
Three forces make this year different from every previous wave of Christian film:
- Star power. What used to be a genre of unknown actors now regularly draws Oscar winners and household names — Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Kingsley, J.K. Simmons, Owen Wilson, Jeff Daniels, Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman (whose Keaton-directed western Rode to Ruin Angel has acquired for 2027).
- Studio maturity. Angel's audience-driven model — more than 2.2 million Angel Guild members who fund and champion films — has proven audiences will show up week after week, and its films average a 93% Rotten Tomatoes audience score.
- The big-screen return. Faith audiences are choosing theatrical experiences again, from event cinema like Fathom's limited runs to communal openings for DAVID and The Chosen — a reversal of the streaming-only trend of the early 2020s.
And in Africa: The Nollywood Gospel Boom
The story is not only Hollywood's. Across Nigeria and Ghana, faith cinema is thriving in its own right: Nollywood gospel films such as Tempting Faith, The Unhealed Prophet and Lagos to Gomorrah are pulling millions of views on YouTube in 2026, often reaching audiences the same week they are produced. For African believers, the barrier to faith filmmaking is no longer distribution but imagination — and the imagination is clearly not lacking.
What to Watch Before the Year Ends
If you only have room for a few picks this Christmas season, these are the four 2026 releases most worth your cinema ticket or family movie night: Angel and the Badman (in theaters now) for a redemptive western the whole family can see; Drummer Boy (November 6) for a Christmas musical born from a Grammy-winning worship band; Hershey (Thanksgiving) for the sweeter side of entrepreneurial faith; and Zero A.D.: The Birth of Christ (December 11) for the most cinematic retelling of the first Christmas in a generation. Then settle in on November 15 for The Chosen Season 6 — the story that started this whole movement, reaching its most powerful chapter yet.
