World Assemblies of God Congress Opens in Accra, First Ever in Africa

ACCRA, GHANA — This week, history is being made in Ghana's capital city. The 10th Triennial World Assemblies of God Congress has opened at the Accra Sports Stadium, and for the first time since the gathering began, the global event is being hosted on African soil.

Delegates from more than 100 countries have travelled to Accra for the congress, which brings together leaders, pastors, and ministers from the World Assemblies of God Fellowship (WAGF), a coalition of sovereign national AG fellowships founded in 1989. The fellowship represents 88 million believers worshipping in some 451,000 churches worldwide.

Empowered for Kingdom Mission

The theme of this year's congress is "EXPANSION: Empowered for Kingdom Mission," a call that echoes the fellowship's heartbeat to reach every nation with the gospel. WAGF Chairman Dominic Yeo captured the spirit of the gathering: "As we gather in Ghana, we come with a renewed passion to see the Church advance beyond its current borders, expand its influence, and be empowered by the Holy Spirit for global impact."

Divine Timing for Ghana

The host fellowship, Assemblies of God Ghana, is led by General Superintendent Rev. Stephen Y. Wengam, who described the privilege of hosting as "divine" timing. He pointed to the strength of the Ghanaian church, nearly 95 years old in the nation, alongside Ghana's relative peace, political stability, and recovering economy as reasons the moment had come.

In the lead-up to the congress, Assemblies of God Ghana committed itself to sustained seasons of prayer and fasting. "I'm especially grateful for the countless hours of prayer Rev. Wengam and the AG Ghana church family have poured into this gathering," said U.S. Assemblies of God General Superintendent Doug Clay. "The fruit of those prayers can be seen and felt."

National and Global Leaders Present

Among the honoured guests is President John Dramani Mahama of the Republic of Ghana, himself a member of the host fellowship, who is serving as one of the featured speakers. Clay also expressed gratitude to the Ghanaian hosts: "The hard work, planning, logistics, and the many details behind the scenes have not gone unnoticed. Your hospitality has made every one of us feel welcomed, cared for, and at home."

Africa's Moment

For believers across the continent, the congress is more than a conference; it is a statement. Christianity's centre of gravity continues to shift toward Africa, and with Accra at the centre of the global AG family this week, Ghanaian churches are being reminded that the nations have come to their doorstep with one shared commission: to expand the Kingdom.

The congress runs through the week, with worship, teaching, and commissioning sessions streamed live for believers around the world who could not make the journey to Accra.
