Regardless of your intention for your kids, how persuasive you can be in court, how influential you are in the board room, and the number of peers who look up to you, there is always an ounce of doubt in you when it comes to your degree of control or your leadership over your kids. Children spend more hours paying attention to the television and social media than listening to you. Regardless of your lesson’s objective, students can’t help but be drawn to the power of the media. The question is not whether it affects us growing up but rather who are we or have become as a result of our media.
“Ghana won’t win a Grammy without me!” Ghana’s worst singer warns. “Kennedy was proposing to another woman in Tracy’s plane.” Popular loud mouth yells. Pastor reveals the secret powers of gospel singers-The Illuminati list! And our big one for today, Kuborlor arrested in Australia for walking barefooted on hot coal!
We hear news like this every day in the media but we are too smart to ever ask why so many of us are obsessed with the private lives of others. The media used to be a window to the world out there, giving us locally acquired assets, so we can blindly copy cultures we barely understand and teach our children morals we never had. Today it’s promoting fake lives so we can be fake people, promoting men who live beyond their means so we can be rich without owning a thing.
The door is open for anyone with deep pocket even if they can’t sing; and we can’t challenge the gatekeepers because we also took the Kool-Aid. It is your comments that fuel the business of Gossip; but you are not paid a dime. Your likes make the media big and yet you earn nothing but a waste of your time, blocked from the reality you deserve, served with the content someone else prepared.
Did you hear this? Did you hear that? News for your attention to distract you from focusing on your locally acquired assets and erroneous world perception! Forged beefs to keep you following and scandals to insult your intelligence! A dive into the private lives of celebs to lower your self-esteem, kill yourselves and top up your cup of jealousy till you have the guts to rob and the heart to murder.

Don’t break your heart yet. As a Christian in a world where the media serves you values on a plate of delight and downplays the morals you were once guided by, how do you raise a child to be a good Christian?
The lord used to be your shepherd and the bible your conscience. Psalm 23 is now just a memory verse and you a slave to the entertaining content and the bond you have made with characters on your favorite sitcoms. Your media made you and so did mine.
“He restoreth my soul”. I should be referring to the lord but I’m referring to the love songs that alienate me from the Christian world and make me feel good about myself. I look at my six months baby in a trance by a television and imagine the years of my life I have been conformed to this world, transformed by the wisdom of great men and women, men and women who don’t preach God but science and a strange doctrine, a doctrine that elevates men and shutters the still voice in us. My media made me. What about you?
My body opened. A home for the devils I invite when I listen to the perverted lyrics and watch witchcraft disguised as television shows, day and night, till I am out of control, preaching on the pulpit and fornicating behind it, out of control, having a beautiful wife at home and a side chick when she is on the road. My media made me. What about you?
The Media used to be a forum of thoughts and a mirror to judge ourselves and others. Today, we don’t recognize him in all his glory and all his kinds. He lost his reputation and we, our way, following the perverted staff, not of the lord’s, but the world. I don’t recognize him in all his glory. Do you recognize him?
Rating a movie 18 didn’t grow you up. Trending on social media didn’t last long. Winning the crown of social bully robbed you of many friends, and promoting your money rituals fueled your future leaders to kill each other. Don’t you miss the days when you could leave your kids in the hands of the media, come back from work and find them better today than they did yesterday? I miss the channel that served me values and food to my soul. I’m pregnant with evil ideas and have no idea how I got them. My media made me. What about you?
How can we unmake something that made us from childhood and might be making us in adulthood? There is light at the end of the tunnel. As long as we have life, the balance between who we were and who we are can change. Let God be our shepherd and let his staff lead us on the way. Let’s pray.
The lord is my shepherd and I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures and leads me besides the still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me to the path of righteousness for his name sake. Though I am bombarded daily by messages and images designed to weaken my faith, I will fear no evil. For God is with me. Thy rod and thy staff will comfort me, and in the end, you and I will see him. We might not have control over the media we are exposed to, but we are made by God and not the media.
